What are Stock Markets?

I don’t wan’t to live with guaranteed. I want to live with curiousity. That’s why I love stock markets.

Mettembanker

This is the quote that I could think of for my journey so far as a stock market investor. I shall be completing 10 years in stock markets this June.

Exactly 10 yrs ago, I had opened my Demat account.

I have often wondered about them. The stock markets. They have been the most exciting place I have visited so far in my financial journey of investments. Therefore, I would abstain from telling you anything about the stock markets in conventional ways.

Tread further at your own risk!

I want to start by telling that I was dead scared to venture into stock markets. I was scared because till then whomsoever met till then, my family and friends, told me stories filled with horrors. The horrors and ordeals of people losing their everything like they were in a casino losing to gambling.

Yes, I got the impression that the stock markets were the gambler’s dens.

Some of those who go addicted to this seemingly malicious habits fell prey to losing all their wealth, and some even took their lives in the aftermath. I was always brought up with values to ensure safety and security, consciously. But, on the hindsight, I have always loved and lived adventurous life.

You can’t be less adventurous when your daddy is in the armed forces. I constantly moved. He would take us every where he would go. We were lucky that most of his postings occurred near the habitats where schools and hospitals could be found.

We eventually become the bigger denominators once we let ourselves freedom from the fears and the unfound insecurities, choosing the growth 📈 over the contents.

And I think this is what has allowed me to think from the futuristic perspectives. People generally get scared of their uncertain future by extrapolating their present fears. On the contrary, I always believed that we only grow bigger, stronger and better when we allow ourselves the freedom to experiment and fail.

Because experiments and failures in them remove all our attached fears. And see the big rewards beyond the temporary setbacks.

So, if you are of the temperament that I just described above, I welcome you to the world of stock investing – unpredictable, full of experiments and full of excitement.

I totally remember how I bought my first ever stock. I remember that I had made a purchase of 2 units of a PSU. My logic: they are safe!

As I said before, safety was what was taught me as a value. So, I looked for safe stocks in my first buys. Clearly indicates that you are ridden by the philosophies you carry in your head where ever you go.

Therefore, it becomes important to realise that our philosophies about define us more than anything else. To venture into stock markets, you must possess the temperament that is experimental, open to failures and a curious learner.

If you have these 3(open to experiment, open to failures and an open mind filled with curiousity), you will not run away from the stock markets. And that’s your real win the day you learn to stand despite the mayhems!

My portfolio turned into green just an year ago. I have lived with RED all these years. And never complained about it. I knew I was learning and I was improving over my previous learnings. Even though, I did not invest big time, I can clearly see that I did not lose back myself and be lost! I survived.

Survival is one such thing. Even though , I spoke so adventurously, I must confess that a larger part of my investing portfolio is into safe deposits so far. In instruments like PPF, SIPs, NPS, Deposits. And this is what I want to tell you, build your base first.
